For his first fiction novel (tuesdays with Morrie and other books before it were all non-fiction), Albom chooses his uncle Eddie as the protagonist-his favorite uncle, who taught Albom to play the keyboard, who did everything he could do avoid working at Ruby Pier, but still ended up as the Head of Maintenance at the Ruby Pier (an oceanside amusement pier). So I was pleasanty surprised when I got to read about a dear old man suffering from ALS, and his talks with the author instead, which were the exact opposite of boring!Įddie Maintenance. My tryst with Mitch Albom began when I borrowed ‘ tuesdays with Morrie‘ from a friend, and on getting an idea of what the book was about, let’s say I wasn’t so enthusiastic to start it, because I find philosophy talk boring. Reviewer Magazine - “…an imaginative, almost hallucinatory tale of madness, traveling and free spirits doing what they want.” Reader Views 2009 Literary Awards, First Place, Humor Category -“This book could easily be the sleeper of the year…” So sit down, put on some protective goggles, and get ready for Carbuncle to blast you in the face with a warm load of fictitious sickness. Reverend Lance Carbuncle is going to kick you square in the balls and send you on a wild ride that may or may not answer the following questions: what happens when two white trash, trailer park-dwelling, platonic life partners go on a moronic and misdirected crime spree? can their manly love for each other endure when one of them suffers a psychological bitch-slap that renders him a homicidal maniac? will a snaggletoothed teenage prostitute tear them apart? what is the best way to use a dead illegal alien to your advantage in a hostage situation? what's that smell? and, what the hell is Alf the Sacred Burro coughing up? Carbuncle's latest offering, Grundish and Askew, ponders these troubling questions and more. Strap on your athletic cup and grab a barf bag. Each year, every sixteen-year-old girl is sent into the forest to release her magic and return purified, ready for marriage or work in the fields. The book follows a girl named Tierney James who lives in Garner County, a place that is built on the antiquated rules of a woman’s place to an extreme. It is visceral and unlovely and that is what makes it so engrossing it’s not the gore itself that makes it fascinating, but the fact that it does not balk from or censor the ugly parts of the story. Kim Liggett’s The Grace Year is reminiscent of a brutally feminine Lord of the Flies. Cumulatively, it took me about 4 hours to finish this 404 page book and when I’d finished, I wanted to read it again. When I got home, I laid in my bed despite the mountain of homework I hadn’t yet started chipping away at and didn’t get up until I’d finished it. I read The Grace Year in the car on the way home from visiting colleges in North Carolina. Must the rest of the news abandon us to despair? The world is asking us to consider that question deeply. She defined kindness and heroism as “moral beauty,” which “triggers ‘elevation’ – a positive and uplifting feeling” that “acts as an emotional reset button, replacing feelings of cynicism with hope, love and optimism.”The study suggested this happens when one watches a news story about kindness after watching ones about bombings, cruelty, and violence. They support “the belief that the world and people in it are good.” And they provide “relief to the pain we experience when we see others suffering.”It was her fourth point that stuck with me. A week ago, a British researcher published an article titled “Stories of kindness may counteract the negative effects of looking at bad news.” As you might imagine, I was intrigued.Kathryn Buchanan of the University of Essex shared four main takeaways from her research: Stories of kindness remind us of our shared values. This process complies with humane handling and slaughter laws in Canada and is deemed by some farmed animal welfare experts as a somewhat nicer way to knock out animals - via CO2 rather than electrocution - before they are bled out. Across Canada, 13 meat processing plants currently utilize a method of rendering pigs unconscious prior to slaughter called controlled atmospheric stunning (CAS). |
