Cranberry Bread Here’s a brief summary of The Great Alone: This book will leave you thinking and by the end of it you’ll be holding your loved ones a little tighter, which makes it a great choice for a book club. There is a love story and triumph in the midst of (alot) of tragedy, just like in The Nightingale, but this is a very different read centered on the mother/daughter struggle. This novel centers on the relationship between a mother and a daughter. If you’ve read The Nightingale and loved it, you’ll love this book, too, although it’s very different. I was actually able to listen to it on audiobook and it was fantastic, if you get that choice. Koen's story is set in the midst of the turbulent politics of the English and French aristocracy as well as the South Sea Bubble. The circumstances behind the work's publication led to Koen becoming the subject of much media attention in the late 1980s. She sold the hardcover rights to Random House for $350,000, which was then a record for a new novelist. A former magazine editor, Koen had never before written a novel and spent four years developing it while living as a housewife with her family. Through a Glass Darkly is a 1986 historical fiction novel by American author Karleen Koen. According to Persepolis, one Scud hit the house next to hers, killing her friend and entire family. She experienced an Iraqi air raid and Scud missile attacks on Tehran. She attended the Lycée Français there and witnessed, as a child, the growing suppression of civil liberties and the everyday-life consequences of Iranian politics, including the fall of the Shah, the early regime of Ruhollah Khomeini, and the first years of the Iran-Iraq War. It’s something I’ve come to call privately the kaleidoscope pf crazy- shimmering and beautiful in certain lights, paisley and horrifying in others.” They spend hours on the roof of their house smoking and talking, but Katie can always sense “his emotional axis shifting a little, off-kilter. At the beginning of the novel Katie seems to almost idolize her brother. The characterization is all over the place, too. Breathless ends up cramming every possible teenage trope into its 331 pages: friendship, drinking, religion, sex, drugs, wealth, first love, jealousy, mean girls and damaged girls etc etc. When her brother, Will, goes off the deep end again, Katie’s parents make the decision to send her off to boarding school. The novel is apparently semi-autobiographical and tells the story of Katie Kitrell, a fifteen-year-old championship swimmer with an alcoholic mother, workaholic father and psychopathic older brother. All I can say is that I kept reading for her because there’s really nothing to recommend this book.īreathless was written when Warman herself was just out of high school and sadly, that’s how it reads. A few months back I read Jessica Warman’s novel, Between, and although I didn’t love it straight off it definitely grew on me. A student in my writing class saw Breathless on my bookshelf and told me that I had to read it next. Still, taste is at best a matter of dispute, and the mayor has a right to his preferences. To make matters worse, “The Thin Man” is not even Hammett’s best book, being outranked in the view of most critics by “The Maltese Falcon” and “Red Harvest.” In his wisdom, Hickenlooper has chosen “The Thin Man,” a whodunit by Dashiell Hammett that has the distinction of being one of the few cases in which the film version of a book is actually better than the novel. So far so good, but since this opens up the field considerably, you’d think the mayor might go with an author or book that has some kind of local following. Other cities feature books by authors who can’t be in attendance, so why not Denver? At least a dead author can’t be insulted by anemic audiences at discussions of his or her book. Given the discouraging attendance at programs featuring recent honorees, this is understandable, but one wonders what took Hickenlooper so long. Digital Replica Edition Home Page Close MenuĪfter four years of steadily dwindling support for his One Book/One Denver program, Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper has decided to make some changes for this year’s event.įirst and most important, he’s given up the idea that the book under consideration must be by a living author who can come to town and entertain the masses. She's trapped in the lake by Morgan Le Fay, causing Ethan, the husband, to think she left him. The woman turns out to be Vivienne, the Lady of the Lake, and Arthur's aunt. In this story, the girls are the daughter of a self-made Count, who met their mother near a lake in the forest. This was an interesting retelling of the Grimm Brothers' The Twelve Dancing Princesses, which took the original fairy tale and combined it with Arthurian legend, making the boy who figures out the mystery behind the girls' worn out shoes one of Arthur's Knights of the Round Table. And that's one of the main reasons I read fairy tales/retellings. The ending of Night Dance made me really happy. Why wouldn't the father himself just spend the night in the bedroom and figure it out? Or have one of his female servants do it? But that might have been from the original fairy tale itself and not the fault of this author. The winner of the contest got to choose one of the sisters to marry. The father held a contest to have young men spend the night practically in the sisters' bedroom to find out how they were escaping at night, even though he was concerned about the men making advances on the girls. The nice surprise of this book is that the author mixed Arthurian legend in with this tale. So after reading this and that, I've been able to figure out a bit more of the tale just by comparing common elements. One of my favorite books,, is based on this tale. I still haven't gotten around to reading the actual "Twelve Dancing Princesses" fairy tale.
